Ragnaros

#Ragnaros of #Hearthstone of World of Warcraft. Something I did a while back for  #Blazingboost. Nice guys, legit company. I don't normally paint fire or lava so I'm hoping this turned out okay ^_^
It was layered art to be used on a Web Interface. Super tough painting fire that can be used on any background while keeping its glow. Although I think in the end it was used as flattened art.

Soarbon revised

After looking at my last post of Soarbon yesterday, I decided not to add pointy ears and horns. That wasn't working too well. I was trying to establish an iconic look for him. Something anyone could sketch down and people could still recognize him. So I left his burial wraps on him to help define who he is, but he isn't a vampire.. he's something else. Stick around and see him painted next week.
Thanks for viewing.

Soarbon

So I missed posting this yesterday for my Monster Friday, but I did post it on FaceBook. I definitely try to post there more than other places. Friend me ^_^
https://www.facebook.com/joshua.burns.1694
So I am finally getting my IP put together and I figure using Fridays to develop a sketch and the next to paint would be better. This is to make sure I'm getting my stuff done too. I will continue to paint the Silverhawks until they are done, and then I will put more time into this IP I'm creating. I will share what's its called once I have enough put out for people to see. But for now this is Soarbon. He has dark hair and dark wings, and wears mostly grays. He could still be a pivotal character at this point, I dunno. I still have to design a visual element for him that makes him recognizable at a distance. And could be sketched on paper so anyone would know who it is. I may ditch the pointed ears too. Not a fan of them but I have a reason for them.

Steelheart

Hey everybody so here is #Steelheart of the 80s cartoon Silverhawks! I'm hoping the rest of the hawks will go easily as I'm back on em'. There is only Mon*Star and Quicksilver left to paint. I have been experimenting with some new painting techniques and I think it will help to make these last two more epic than when I started painting the #Silverhawks months ago. I'm hoping you enjoy em.

Draugr

Hey another sketchy Monster Friday paint. Its a Draugr of Skyrim, but its also an undead creature in Norse mythology. I admit its more unfinished than the other monsters but I only spent a handful of hours on this one. I wanted it to read really well as a thumbnail so I'm happy with it.
I sketched it in Painter12, but went into Photoshop to paint it because painter wasn't creating the look I wanted in my monster paints. 5 hours.

Enjoy

Spriggan

Hey everybody, so here is another sketchy paint for Monster Friday. My friend Brandon suggested a Spriggan from Skyrim, of the Elderscrolls series. A lot of neat content wrapped up in that IP. Lots of dragons too which might just make it into a friday sketch. I really do like Skyrim so much I am drawing piles of inspiration from it. I suggest to anyone a tour through the art and design of the characters and environments.
This painting was done in photoshop in 8 hours.
30% foundation work, 70% painting. If anyone has questions, shoot me an email and I'll try to get back to ya soon.

Armored Troll

Hey everybody, so here is a paint I did of an armored troll from Skyrim. Yeah its a bit rough. I am developing a technique to paint as much as I can within a day. Because during the week I don't have more than 8 hours a day to devote to personal projects/paints. My target is to get a finished painting done within 12 hours. This one took under 8. I start off sketching the figure I imagine. Nothing fancy, but enough to build a strong foundation of values. I add just the main colors I want to use, then I add highlights and shadows. From there I work the painting, adding definition and details. I make adjustments and such as needed and repeat. I think the major challenge is making sure people will recognize who the character is ^_^ I hope you like this monster Friday!

Skyrim Deathhound

Hey everybody, so every Friday for a while I want to paint a monster and post. No masterpieces, but I'm trying to push my output to doing a paint within a day regularly. Its going to be a little messy at first ^_^ I'm hoping I learn how to keep it clean as I go.
Thanks for watching!

Angel Warrior

Hey everybody, so I'm painting more loosely lately to create more paintings per week. Right now, I'm trying to finish a painting the same day as well. I had to use a couple hours over a couple days to finish this. I painted everything on the first day except for the face because I was having trouble creating a warriors look. But I finally got it after looking through some characters on skyrim. I may ref some more of those faces later as time goes on.

Happy Halloween

Hey, Happy Halloween!
I wanted to try to paint something in less than a day. I did this in about 6 hours, using a 'wet thick brush' in PhotoshopCC. I like the impulsiveness that went into this piece. I tried to keep the energy I had all the way through from when I started. I'm hoping you all like it and have a good Halloween night ^_^

Vampire Hunter D on his Cyborg Horse

Vampire Hunter D  -unfinished.
Hey so I haven't posted in a while. Bad me. I figure I can share something of mine, that most likely will never be finished. So here is a painting of Vampire Hunter D I was working on last year around Halloween. I wanted to include his cyborg horse and the dreaded windmills of the Barbarois. I'm not sure who the girl is but I was inspired by the Final Fantasy art of Yoshitaka Amano, for D as well. Hope you all enjoy it in its unfinished state.

Steelwill

Steelwill painted by me.
Hi all, so I've been working on the Silverhawks when I get the chance. So far now I have painted 3 (with 3 more to go), this one being the character Steelwill. He is the typical jock of the team, but paired with his twin sister Steelheart. And she will be the next Silverhawk I paint.
I was a bit disappointed with the Bluegrass painting regarding the lighting and textures so I tried to really make this one feel more dynamic.
I picked this particular pose because I wanted it to feel like a football player rushing right towards you with intention. He seemed a bit plain with only his charcoal chrome body so I added his jersey and shredded it to imply combat. I hope nobody is upset that I took some liberties to make him seem less plain. In the end I really like how this turned out for the character.
God bless and cheers,
keep painting.

Bluegrass

Bluegrass painted by myself.
Hey everybody! So continuing the Silverhawks is Lt. Col. Bluegrass, pilot of the Miraj. His guitar plays music notes that can do damage, although I chose to leave out that detail in this static pose.
I was focusing on textures, but since I lost track of my lighting the painting became cartoony as well. I used Painter 12 to illustrate this and Photoshop to adjust the colors... Let me know what you think ^_^

The Copper Kidd Finished

The Copper Kidd painted by me.
The Copper Kidd from Silverhawks 80's cartoon.
So last month I posted some line work of this character and said I was painting it. I had to tweak almost everything once I got going and it was worth the extensive work. I was initially going to have his metal skin super smooth but I changed my mind and started adding nicks and dings everywhere which would be typical of battle. I left his wings and face shield out of this illustration since he is not in flight. Concerning his face I was looking at fish people from other artworks and thought some slightly amphibian skin would be appropriate for him to complement his copper metal body. His race resembles mimes which is creepy but I left his face white with black points and pink nose. Over all I think he is a well designed 80's character. I would have painted a team jacket on him but since this might be the only portrait of him I paint I left it off. Is anyone interested in seeing more of the Silverhawks painted? Copper Kidd Line Work

Line work in Painter12
Hey all, so I'm working on another painting and I wanna keep some fan art going too. Here I have started some line work on the character The Copper Kidd from Silverhawks, an 80's cartoon. I have been painting it in color to be posted later.
I'm trying to develop a better way to communicate ideas before they are painted because of a couple sour projects. You don't get paid for time lost so it needs to be as right as possible from the start ^_^ Stay tuned..

Cheers!

Alisha

Alisha, my wifey <3
So as I was looking through pictures of my wife for a portrait of her as Snow White, I came across one of her with reddish hair. I liked it so much I painted it. It had a good color scheme all around and I needed practice painting in color anyway.. ^_^
I have been making a habit of starting off with lines from now on, and then blocking in color underneath those lines. Once that is done I start painting on top as though I just made an underpainting traditionally.
See below.
It seems to work for doing color. Of course as I paint I have to do some adjustments to lip size and such and moving cheeks around and such to get her features just right. The little details are so important ^_^

Maleficent

Maleficent by Josh Burns
So I was inspired to do another spooky painting when I saw the previews of the new Disney Maleficent movie coming out in May!
In this piece I again focused on Hard Edges, Soft Edges, Lost Edges, and Dramatic Lighting. I also used Painter12 and the Wacom Intuos3.

Btw you may also want to check out Posemanikin's painting of Maleficent as well!

Going Native

My wife loves chubby squirrels
Hey everyone! I have been trying to start a portrait of my wife for some time as Snow White. I really want to push it, so I have been playing with lighting. I have some good ideas to build off of, but for now I painted her slightly as a Native North American. Its in her blood.
This painting is for practice but I kept working at it and I have became attached to it. I really spend more time doing my wife's portrait because I don't want to slack on it. She loves little animals and adores the ones chubby by nature ^_^
Btw you can buy the necklace worn in this painting. Just follow the link:

Guts the Berserker

Guts the Berserker
Hey everybody! So I have been painting some black and white portraits. They are kind of sketchy which right now I like a lot. I could render details, but the lighting is what I am focusing on. I felt that most of my stuff lately was flat looking which is why I am pushing the use of chiaroscuro. Also I am still paying attention to the hard, soft and lost edges.
Oh yeah, this character is Guts the Berserker from a Dark Horse Comic called 'Berserk'. Someone mentioned him so I googled and found some cool references. He seemed right in line with the things I like to paint which of course makes it easier to paint ^_^

Ergo Proxy

Ergo Proxy done in Painter12
Hey all, this is Ergo Proxy, aka Vincent Law, from the animé 'Ergo Proxy'. I highly recommend watching this series all the way through. I have done it. Its dark and suspenseful scifi.
So I actually painted this piece a few months back. It was a stepping stone into a more moody style of painting for me. I have been pushing the points of interest in my paintings and learning to omit the lesser details by observing hard, soft, and lost edges.
I wanted to paint a few more characters from the series but I might just continue the Vampire Hunter D portraits/ drawings ^_^
Cheers

Vampire Hunter D ..again

idea with hand on hat

Hey everyone! I was happy with my first sketch of Vampire Hunter D from January 2nd, so I wanted to paint another version. At first I had his arm fading into darkness, but thought it would be better if I had his hand holding onto the brim of his hat. I try to paint narrative pictures to lead your imagination into story. Sometimes its hit or miss. I know there is something I could've done to make this piece stronger, but I cannot see it yet. He is a fun character to paint so I may do another portrait again later on. Let me know what you all think! ^_^

Vampire Hunter D

Sketch of D
Hey everyone! I'm hoping it was a good year for all of you in 2013. This month I am posting a sketch/drawing of Vampire Hunter D. I referenced art from Yoshitaka Amano and photography from Sylwia Makris.
New style. I have been changing my approach to painting by starting off with line drawings now. So in the beginning people see a much clearer direction to where I'm going to end up. Color is not really an issue with this one since D mostly wears black, but I may add some splashes of reds and such later if people ask.
